Protest, strikes and marches are a common phenomenon in the times we are living in. In recent episode, we saw Vibhuti protesting to save water. The makers of the show use this protest to show people who use protests for political or personal gains. They also show people like Saxena who care about the causes that they support. In some episodes, we saw Tiwari protecting Angoori and the rest of the people in his colony from becoming slaves of an Arab sheikh. traffic in slaves from India to Arab countries is a troubling phenomenon not talked about on Indian TV.
Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain took on this subject in a lighter vein to start a conversation around it. Angoori expresses a desire to complete her education by going back to school. Vibhuti is shown supporting her decision while Tiwari is shown opposing it and being embarrassed by it. This storyline of the show not only promoted adult education, but also education for women.
In one of the episodes, Razia Gulkandi, the Kathak teacher, is shown to be transgender. She asks all the men in her class to be comfortable with their feminine side if they want to dance. Angoori demands freedoms for herself within her marriage. Whether it is going back to school, learning Kathak or just being more adventurous, breaking down standards and expectations of masculinity is something the show speaks of. In earlier episodes, Vibhuti falls in love with Tiwari after reading a magical romantic book. Through this, the makers were able to shed light on some of the injustices and punishments the LGBT community have faced. Not to mention, this was a rare instance where a same-sex couple was shown on Indian TV.
However, the treatment of these topics leaves a lot to be desired. But by merely talking about relevant ideas, Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain has managed to bring a fresh breath of change on Indian TV.
