Friends became one of the most well-known television series of all time. The program, which followed six young people living in the center of New York as they struggled to figure out life and love, became a type of flagbearer for an entire generation and served as the model for several subsequent shows that strongly borrowed from the premise. Despite being mostly a comedy series, the show’s popularity stemmed from the emotional essence at its core, as well as the numerous heartbreaking moments we witnessed throughout the years. Here are some of the most important life lessons we learned from those experiences.

1) Your past does not define who you are today.

Ross had recently divorced when we first met him at the start of the show. Rachel had gotten away from her residence on her route to her wedding. All of the other characters, such as Phoebe’s traumatic background and Chandler’s troubled relationship with his parents, were dealing with baggage of some sort. Despite having to cope with a lot in the past, the six major characters were able to carve a different beginning for themselves and discover happiness, as well as a sense of being complete and at peace with terrible memories.

2) Compromise is a part of love.

Characters on the show tried to find love without compromising their beliefs on numerous occasions, such as when Richard refused to have children but still tried to marry Monica, or when Ross and Rachel disapproved on whether or not they were on a break, or when Emily refused to let Ross even talk to Rachel after their marriage while he was in New York. Those connections did not last. When characters were prepared to compromise for the sake of love, such as when Chandler conquered his fear of intimacy to marry Monica, it ended in some of the show’s most passionate and fulfilling relationships.

3) Life isn’t a waiting game.

One of the show’s main themes was the significance of seizing opportunities as soon as they arise. Ross waited far too long to speak with Rachel, and she was eventually taken by Paolo. Richard lost Monica because he did not want to have children, and when he realized he still wanted her even if it meant having children, it was too late; she had moved on to Chandler. Many times, characters fail to recognize a chance that was right in front of them, and by the time they learned what they had missed, the opportunity had slipped away, leaving them with regret.

4) Money Isn’t the Most Important Motivator

Joey has gotten a lot of money from Chandler throughout the years. Joey never truly compensated him for it. When the time came, Joey was pleased to lend Chandler a substantial sum to help with expenditures, on top of having already given Monica a similarly substantial sum without telling Chandler. The friendship between them was far too strong to be harmed by the question of who owed whom how much money. Despite having jobs with vastly different pay scales, the six have remained strong and connected over the years, sharing equally in their pleasures and sorrows.

5) Treat everyone with kindness and justice.

Because of how pleasant all of the main characters are, Friends is frequently accused of being boring. Regardless of their flaws and troubles, any of the main characters would drop everything to aid not only each other but anyone who needed it. When faced with a difficult decision, the characters repeatedly pick the right path, such as when Chandler let Janice go, so she could try to work things out with her ex-husband for the sake of her child. Or when Rachel agreed to quit seeing Ross in order to comply with Emily’s request. It was the characters’ inherent kindness when confronted with difficult situations that made the cast so many people’s ideal friends have.
