“I don’t want to look like a Bhangi”- is what got Munmun Dutta aka Babita Ji from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah into a legal trouble recently, as she got booked under SC/ST Act. The word “Bhangi” depicts of the people belonging to the lower castes.
She uploaded a vlog on her YouTube channel, a few days back, where she said a similar narrative as mentioned above. The video got real hype and criticisms from the viewers, and #arrestMunmunDutta also became trending.
However, as of now, for the casteist slur in the video, an FIR has been lodged against her at Haryana’s Hansi. It was registered by Rajat Kalsan, who is convenor of the National Alliance for Dalit Human Rights.
Munmun Dutta has apologised on her social media, confessing the verbal massacre, however, she blamed it on the “Language Barrier” and said that she was misinformed about the meaning of the particular word, “Bhangi”
