Amrish Lal Puri is remembered for playing iconic villainous roles in the Hindi cinema. He has also worked in other Indian and international film industries.
Puri, who acted in more than 500 films from which most of them were hits, was one of the most successful villains in Bollywood. In his early days, he performed in Prithvi Theatre in plays written by Satyadev Dubey, where he became famous, and in 1979, he won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
Puri worked with notable playwrights of the time, including Satyadev Dubey and Girish Karnad. This theatre recognition led him to work in television ads and later, in movies.
Puri’s dominating screen presence and baritone made him stand out as one of the best amongst the other villains of those days. He is most remembered for his role as Mogambo in the Hindi film Mr. India, and to international audiences, he is best known as Mola Ram in the Hollywood film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
His contribution to the theatre will be remembered forever. And his work will always keep entertaining us.
