Tanmay Bhat is a part of AIB, a Mumbai-based comedy group with more than 1.5 million members on YouTube. Each of AIB’s top 6 videos has had over 5 million views, demonstrating how well-liked their form of satire is. Over 13 million people have seen the most popular one, in which actress Alia Bhatt self-deprecates lightheartedly. Other videos include a rape and victim-blaming presentation with actress Kalki Koechlin as well as parodies of Bollywood party songs and North Indian weddings (the latter of which stars actor Irfaan Khan).
Born in 1987, Tanmay Bhat studied at Mumbai’s Sheth Chunilal Damodardas Barfiwala High School. According to a post on YourStory, Bhat believes that “anything has the potential to be funny,” and he praises comedians like Raju Shrivastava, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Louis CK, and Patrice O’Neil in addition to Raju Srivastav, who is his favorite. On the website Gigstart, which links entertainers like DJs, comedians, and magicians with potential customers, Bhat’s biography includes a remark from comedian Vir Das of the popular comedy troupe Delhi Belly, who calls his stuff “edgy, personal, authentic” and having “the speed of a rebel invasion.”
Bhat’s career in comedy reportedly began seven years ago when he won the Weirdass Hamateur night, a national competition, according to The Telegraph in 2011. Weirdass Comedy, a comedy consultancy run by Vir Das, held a talent search. The 28-year-old Bhat, who was formerly listed in The Times of India’s “Top 10 comics,” started working for Weirdass Comedy after 2009 and served as the opening act for Das’s popular stand-up show Walking on Broken Das, according to Stand Up Planet. He participated in the first installment of “Local Heroes,” an all-Indian lineup of comedians stand-up event staged by Mumbai’s Comedy Store, where he currently frequently performs. Additionally, he appeared on the UK comedians’ show “Best in Stand-up.” Before starting their channel in 2013, Bhat and Gurusimran Khamba created AIB as a collection of podcasts.
On Sunday night, comedian Tanmay Bhat invited Ranveer Singh to appear on a late-night Instagram live, and when Ranveer was asked about his wedding, he gave the funniest response. This bold move earned him the wrath of political organizations, Bollywood celebrities, and a large following of adoring followers. The “Sachin vs. Lata Civil War” film, in which Bhat impersonates the two Bharat Ratna winners and acts out an insulting discussion between them using the face-swap feature, has been called “disrespectful” and “disgusting.”
