ZEE5’s latest offering, Ghamasaan, is a crime thriller that attempts to tell the usual gangster saga from a different perspective. Instead of overwhelming the audience with mindless violence, the film tries to weave a story filled with realism and systemic critique. But does the film make an impact as the title suggests? Storyline
The film follows an honest cop, Aditya Singh (Pratik Gandhi), and a deadly, dangerous gangster, Maharaj (Arshad Warsi). The story takes place in 2006, when the dacoit Maharaj stays in the jungle of Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, along with his big gang. The gangster threatens people around him and rules the area, as no one can muster the courage to stand against him. However, everything changes when politician Kumari Sarojini (Seema Azmi) raises her voice against Maharaj, bringing the cop Aditya Singh in to halt the activities of Maharaj until the elections, but he aims to dismantle and eliminate the dacoit empire. What happens next, you’ll have to watch to find out.
Direction, Presentation, Editing And More
Inspired by true events, Piiyush Singh and Ram Yash Singh’s crime thriller story may seem familiar, but its execution and interpretation elevate the experience. Tigmanshu Dhulia’s direction plays a big part, with his vision making the familiar crime drama feel fresh. The director cuts the unnecessary crap, making it feel realistic. One key part is that the makers didn’t force a love angle but let the film breathe naturally.
Tigmanshu Dhulia’s screenplay is engaging, and the dialogues were good, not trying to win hearts but subtly impressing. There were several moments when the film genuinely hooked us, exploring emotion, action, and drama. The story before the climax is especially interesting.
Performances
It seems Arshad Warsi is on a mission—this year the actor played so many characters, and each one has left its own impact, and Maharaj is no exception. From his appearance to his body language, tone, and expression, he captures a typical Uttar Pradesh gangster exceptionally well. Known for his comedy, the actor revives that in a few scenes. No doubt, gray characters are becoming a choice for actors now.
While the film leans on Arshad’s shoulders, the success couldn’t have been possible without Pratik Gandhi. As a cop, he was courageous, fiery, and impressive, commanding attention. The scene where he talks to the antagonist is especially powerful.
Rajpal Yadav plays a key part, and he makes it worth it whenever he appears on screen. Ishita Dutta as Aparna, Aditya’s wife, brings a different side to the storyline.
Deepraj Rana, Seema Azmi, Jatin Goswami, Paritosh Sand, Anurag Thakur, Mrityunjay Pandey and others rightfully contributed to the storyline.
Verdict
The ZEE5 film is exactly what the title suggests: Ghamasaan. While it has its share of drawbacks, it is still a decent watch for this weekend. Despite its flaws, the film impresses and engages viewers enough to watch till the end.
