For years, Kapil Sharma has been Bollywood’s favourite destination for laughter, with stars turning up on his shows to promote their films, exchange jokes and occasionally become the butt of one. But the entertainment landscape is changing, and Samay Raina (India’s Got Latent) is emerging as a comedian who knows how to capture the attention of both celebrities and the internet.
So why are stars increasingly showing interest in Samay’s brand of comedy? The attraction could lie in the instant buzz his performances generate. A celebrity attending his show can become the subject of countless reels, memes and social media conversations almost immediately. In an industry where digital engagement has become an important part of publicity, that kind of attention is hard to ignore.
Samay’s humour is markedly different from Kapil’s. Known for his sharp roasting and spontaneous exchanges, he has developed a style that appeals to viewers looking for something unpredictable. Although controversies have followed him, his comedy continues to attract attention. The presence of celebrities such as Alia Bhatt and Kunal Kemmu, along with casting director Mukesh Chhabra, has added to the interest surrounding his performances.
Interestingly, Samay has also developed a friendly equation with the paparazzi. His willingness to pose, joke and engage with photographers has made him a familiar face in entertainment videos. Kapil, in contrast, has occasionally attracted criticism over his interactions with photographers. At a time when an entertainer’s personality beyond the stage is constantly under public scrutiny, these encounters can contribute to their image.
Is familiarity working against Kapil?
Kapil’s success has been built around a dependable team of performers. Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda and Archana Puran Singh have each contributed to the humour and chemistry that audiences associate with his shows. However, with several of these entertainers also visible on other platforms, some viewers believe that the familiar format no longer delivers the same element of surprise.
One viewer expresses this sentiment rather strongly. “Kapil Sharma is offering repetitive content and isn’t bringing anything new to the table. A lot of viewers feel there is no novelty left in his comedy. His ensemble cast, particularly Sunil Grover, adds value to the show, but on his own, Kapil seems to be struggling to offer anything fresh.”

The viewer also believes that Kapil’s past social media controversies may have affected his relationship with a section of his audience.
“People have so many choices today that their tastes keep changing. They might watch something on Netflix today, Amazon Prime Video tomorrow and Hotstar the day after. There’s an entire buffet of entertainment available, but Kapil continues to serve the same material. His team still manages to entertain when everyone comes together, but there’s only so much of the same comedy that audiences can watch.”
It is an observation that raises a larger question about the changing expectations of comedy audiences. With stand-up performances, podcasts, sketches and short videos competing for attention, even established entertainers face the challenge of keeping their material fresh.
However, a marketing professional shares another aspect to Kapil’s popularity. “Honestly, I’m not the right judge of whether Kapil Sharma’s comedy is getting repetitive, but brands love him. I’m a judge of that, and I believe brands think their products can be sold through association with him. So that is what should matter to him,” says the marketing professional.
Can the two really be compared?
Some industry observers liken the comparison between Kapil and Samay to choosing between Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor. Both have their own personalities, strengths and loyal audiences, making a direct comparison difficult.
The marketing professional explains, “It’s a completely different audience. See, both shows have found their audiences, right? Both shows are good for their audiences. I don’t think a hardcore Kapil Sharma fan would appreciate Samay Raina’s humour, and vice versa. So, I think there is space for both, and both are flourishing in their individual spaces.”

Kapil represents a style of mainstream entertainment that brings families together, while Samay’s appeal lies in his unconventional humour and the unpredictability of his performances. Their audiences may overlap, but their approaches to comedy are quite different.
The marketing professional adds, “Honestly, they both are at their peak. They both have a whole different set of audiences. I don’t think there are many people who would say they like both of them. India has around 150 crore people, and there are around 400 million people on Instagram. I believe there are almost 250 million people who would fall under the fan base of both.”
And Kapil is not ready to surrender the spotlight. With The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 5 to stream soon on Netflix and Ajay Devgn expected to feature in the opening episode, the comedian has another opportunity to reconnect with viewers and introduce fresh elements to his established format.
Samay may be enjoying the digital spotlight, but Kapil has spent years building a connection with audiences across generations. As celebrities explore newer comedy platforms and viewers become increasingly selective about what they watch, the changing dynamics of entertainment will be interesting to observe.
After all, making people laugh is one thing. Giving them a reason to keep coming back is another.
