It’s part of our job as parents to guide our children and keep them on track with their daily activities. All too often, this entails setting boundaries, denying requests, and correcting behavior.

Sometimes we can be emotionally generous so that our child does not perceive our advice as “negative.” More often than not, children give us the benefit of the doubt because all of our other loving, affirming interactions add up to a positive balance in our relationship account. That is why having positive interactions with your child is so important.

According to research, we require at least five positive interactions for every negative interaction in order to maintain a healthy, happy relationship that can withstand the normal conflicts and upsets of daily life.
Snuggle with each child for five minutes as soon as they wake up.

Spend an extra minute at breakfast with your children, asking them what they are looking forward to today and enjoying them.

Rather than yelling at your child to keep him moving through the morning routine, empower him by assisting him in creating a chart with photos of him doing each task, and then let him be “in charge” of himself while you simply smile and point to the chart, asking what he needs to do next.

Make a love note to put in her lunch box.
When your child expresses dissatisfaction with going to school, acknowledge his feelings by saying, “You wish you could stay home today, I hear you.”

You can sing happy tunes in the car or skip to the school bus together.

Tell her you can’t wait to see her this afternoon and hear everything about her day as you hug her goodbye. Instead of saying “Be good!” remember to say “Have fun!”

Time-consuming? Sure. You can’t do everything with every child every day. However, the majority of these practices do not add much time to your day; they simply make it run more smoothly.

And when you instill these habits in your children, they will cooperate more, fight less, and WANT to follow your lead.
