Remember witnessing Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi’s curls combed into a bushy wave when you were a youngster in the 1990s? Karisma Kapoor’s hair was pressed into poker-straight tresses, right? It was unthinkable to see an actress or model with curly hair, and we mean really curly hair.

Those of us with curly hair who sat at home watching these people on TV believed our hair was unattractive since it was never seen on women who were deemed attractive. That is beginning to change.

The film business now has a slew of curly-haired actors, and because these women are proud of their natural hair, the generation of women and girls who grew up watching them now has the hair representation they deserve. This transformation, however, did not occur overnight.

Do you recall Kangana Ranaut’s hair from Shaka Laka Boom Boom? Kangana straightened her style physically after being typecast as a wild kid by myopic viewers, swapping her natural hair, which everyone felt too wild for Bollywood, for flat and smooth 2000s razor-cut locks.

Taapsee, too, only wears her hair in its natural, curly state on rare occasions. Flaunting one’s curls isn’t always easy, thanks to an industry that is all about conformist beauty, whether it’s huge blowouts or fair skin. Sanya Malhotra, Kangana Ranaut, and Taapsee Pannu, on the other hand, are normalizing it with each film they do.

The beauty of curly hair has been overlooked for far too long, due to the 90s craze for straightening irons! So many of us used chemical treatments to “rebond” and “smoothen” out natural hair so that it might be straight.

With their forced asymmetry and curtain-straight form, Bobs are no longer attempting to imitate Victoria Beckham. Everything has a wavy feel and a special something about it. The natural hair craze is a product as well as a trigger for this.
