The moment C. Joseph Vijay, in his signature style, proclaimed ‘C. Joseph Vijay ennum naan…’ (I, C. Joseph Vijay…) to take the oath of office as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has left an indelible mark on the hearts of people not just in Tamil Nadu but across India. Given that the political landscape of Tamil Nadu has been dominated by either the DMK or AIADMK for the past 59 years, Vijay’s swift rise to political prominence is nothing short of remarkable.
For someone like Vijay, who has emerged as one of the most commercially successful actors in Indian cinema, making the leap from dominating the box office to commanding attention with ballot boxes is quite a remarkable transition. Although Vijay had a somewhat forgettable debut with ‘Naalaiya Theerpu,’ he steadily overcame obstacles to establish himself as a popular romantic star. Eventually, he underwent a significant shift towards action films, delivering blockbuster hits like ‘Ghilli,’ ‘Pokkiri,’ ‘Thuppakki,’ ‘Leo,’ and ‘Master, ultimately earning the title of the Mass Action Hero.
His latest film, ‘The Greatest Of All Time’ (GOAT), became a commercial success in 2024. As he moved forward in his career, launching his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Jana Nayagan was positioned to be his final film as an actor. With various challenges surrounding its release, there were concerns about whether Vijay would secure a significant portion of votes in the competitive landscape dominated by DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.
However, we have just witnessed a new political wave!! Vijay’s TVK made history in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections by securing an impressive 35% vote share. This remarkable achievement set a new benchmark, surpassing the legendary actor M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), who garnered 33.5% of the votes when he first launched the AIADMK back in the 1970s.
The highlight of the situation was that he outshone his contemporaries in the film industry, including Kamal Haasan, Vijayakanth, and several others.
So what brought about this change in Tamil Nadu?
The significant political shift in Tamil Nadu was largely fueled by widespread public discontent. Voters decisively moved away from the long-standing duopoly of the DMK and AIADMK, opting instead for a fresh, corruption-free alternative. Central to this change was Vijay’s strategic approach, which effectively mobilised the state’s youth and women, empowering the public to demand transformation. With his entry into politics, Vijay transformed his massive fanbase into a well-organised political force. This time, a remarkable turnout of Gen Z voters was evident, contributing to a record-high 81% voter participation, with polling booths buzzing with young energy.
As a resident of Chennai, I observed a large turnout of both young people and elderly women during one of Vijay’s campaign visits in my neighbourhood. Interestingly, the timing of Vijay’s campaigning was conveniently arranged to take place after school hours, which worked out well since several schools are located nearby.
When he finally arrived, crowds of residents filled the streets—a surprising and unusual sight, given that this area has always been a hub of political activity. They cheered excitedly, eager to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician. His campaign clearly signalled a shift in the mindset of ordinary people. Yet, no one could have predicted the extraordinary political success that the Vijay-wave would bring about.
Vijay is still in the early stages of his tenure at the office, but he has certainly made a striking entrance. For a significant portion of the electorate—especially among the youth and women—he is seen as a refreshing change. His absence of traditional political baggage is regarded as a strength rather than a drawback, allowing everyday citizens to feel more connected to the corridors of power. The state views Vijay’s administration as an exceptional political experiment like no other.
