Prosenjit Chatterjee, Bengal’s icon, the state’s beloved ‘Bumba Da,’ gets crowned with Padma Shri—and it definitely becomes a moment to celebrate for the Bengalis. Millions who grew up watching him command the silver screen and witnessed him being awarded the fourth-highest civilian honour are celebrating.
Bengali films have always held a special thread—woven with emotion, a bit of nostalgia and stories that speak to the soul. That thread shines brighter as Prosenjit Chatterjee, the face of modern Bengali cinema, receives the Padma Shri, an honour that celebrates not just one man, but an entire industry.

Behind every legend stands a story of sacrifice, and for Prosenjit Chatterjee, that story begins with his mother. As the actor received the Padma Shri, he took the moment to honour the woman who made it all possible. Talking to PTI, Prosenjit Chatterjee said, “I would first like to dedicate this honour to my mother, who sacrificed so much to raise us and guided me on a journey that has spanned over four decades,” per TOI. Additionally, he made a warm call to his father, the star and icon Biswajit Chatterjee, to let him know about the prestigious moment, saying, “So you have got it.” I am so proud of you.”
Prosenjit Chatterjee dominated the industry in the 80s and 90s with his work. Amar Sangi remains iconic. His 2026 release, Vijaynagar’er Hirey, has emerged as a major box-office success. His iconic ‘Kakababu’ resonated with the crowd, thanks to an intensified script, cultural references, and heritage.
Autograph (2010) marked a pivotal moment when he quintessentially bridged the divide between commercial stardom and the artistic integrity of parallel cinema. That same year, the film Moner Manush saw him embody the soul of Lalon Fakir, a role critics still regard as one of his most transcendent.
The following year brought Baishe Srabon (2011), a cult-classic thriller in which his portrayal of the foul-mouthed, tormented ex-cop Prabir Roy Chowdhury showcased raw intensity that left audiences spellbound. Jaatishwar (2014) is a sweeping reincarnation drama in which he embodied the legendary Anthony Firingee. The film won four National Film Awards.
