Filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi has revealed why the makers of Batwara 1947 chose to accept an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) instead of pursuing a UA rating.
Speaking about the decision, Santoshi said, “They gave the film an ‘A’ certificate in the first screening. To get a ‘UA’ certificate, we would have had to make a few cuts and do another screening. Maybe something else could have come up in the second screening.”
“So, we thought let’s accept the ‘A’ certificate without any cuts. They loved the film so much that not a single frame has been cut,” Santoshi explained.
Batwara 1947 is an adaptation of the acclaimed play Jisne Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamya Hi Nai, set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947.
The film marks another adult-rated release in Sunny Deol’s filmography. It is reportedly his seventh ‘A’-certified film, following titles such as Champion, Farz, Karz: The Burden of Truth, Jaane Dushman, Mohalla Assi, and Chup: Revenge of the Artist.
Slated to release over the Independence Day weekend, Batwara 1947 features an ensemble cast including Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Abhimanyu Singh, and Ali Fazal. The film also brings together Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman and acclaimed cinematographer Santosh Sivan. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film also marks Karan Deol’s return to acting.
