Vivek Agnihotri’s film The Bengal Files is released in theaters on 5 September 2025. It is the last part of his much-talked-about Files Trilogy, which first included The Tashkent Files and then The Kashmir Files. Even before the film’s release, it was in the headlines due to its subject and controversies.
The film is based on the Great Calcutta Killings and the Noakhali riots of 1946. These are historical chapters that are rarely discussed. Religious violence, bloodshed, and suffering are shown in detail in the film. The story shakes you to the core and reminds you how many pages of history remain untold today.
Although the story is strong, the screenplay was not that effective. At many places, the film feels stretched and does not make the expected emotional connection with the audience. The length of 204 minutes also makes it heavier.
The film has a strong ensemble cast of Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumar. Despite this, the performances do not live up to expectations. Some scenes are effective, but at times, the depth of emotions does not reach the screen.
The film’s dialogue is strong and can convey the message, but it does not connect with the heart. The music and background score are fine according to the story’s mood, but do not make it memorable.
Overall, The Bengal Files is a film that must be watched as it brings a suppressed chapter of history to the fore. However, due to technical flaws, a weak screenplay, and mediocre acting, the film does not have as much impact as The Kashmir Files did.
Rating: 3/5 stars
