In the past few years, Bollywood has seen many big actors taking on completely negative or grey roles in films, and this trend seems to be increasing, which makes one wonder: why are more actors preferring to play negative roles?

Back in the day, the situation was such that the hero of the film used to get the most love and attention from the audience, but with the changing mindset to view content, in today’s time not just the hero but whether it’s the heroine or the villain—they equally command attention, or, say, in recent times several negative characters becoming the talking point.

For example, Bobby Deol’s menacing turn as Abrar in the superhit film Animal became a major talking point that also revived his journey as an actor. At the same time, Ranbir Kapoor’s own dark transformation in the film further challenged the traditional hero image.

Also, the stellar Akshaye Khanna got everyone talking with his outstanding performance in Dhurandhar as Rahman Dakait, demonstrating how a powerful antagonist can leave a lasting impact. Earlier, actors such as Saif Ali Khan in Tanhaji and Vijay Sethupathi in Jawan also received praise from the audience.

With the changing dynamics post-COVID-19 pandemic, Bollywood has witnessed a major shift in content and in the way audiences respond. In an era where content is King, audiences wish to see characters who not only embody a heroic personality and do everything right but are also flawed, real, and heroic in their own way.

So, with the growing fascination with morally grey and outright negative characters, more actors are choosing to take on grey roles, stepping away from conventional hero roles.

The major reasons behind actors walking down the grey path are, first, breaking the conventional hero role; when actors come with a grey character, it provides a fresh second innings, especially for actors whose lead-hero traction has declined. The second factor is that actors can explore more deeply, re-create their image, and showcase their real acting skills.

Lastly, the grey characters offer greater scope for performance, unpredictability and transformation; negative roles are no longer merely supporting parts—they have become career-defining opportunities for many actors.

The audience will next see Akshay Kumar as the dark antagonist opposite Saif Ali Khan’s blind protagonist in Haiwaan. Prithviraj Sukumaran will play anti-hero Kumbha in the upcoming film Varanasi starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka. Vivek Oberoi is set to return in a grey role in the upcoming film Spirit, starring Prabhas and Triptii Dimri. Next, Harshvardhan Rane will also play a negative role in Force 3. Actor Abhishek Bachchan is also on the list; he will appear in a grey character in the upcoming film King starring Shah Rukh Khan.
