In a deeply sorrowful development for Indian cinema, veteran actress Sowcar Janaki has passed away. The actress died due to age-related complications and respiratory ailments while under ICU care, and she was 94 years old at the time of her demise.

South Indian Artists’ Association (Nadigar Sangam) president and actor Nassar confirmed the news of the veteran star’s passing.

Revealing the final rites details, Nassar said in his statement, “Legendary star Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away. Her mortal remains will be placed at Cenotaph Road, Teynampet, from 5 pm.”

Reportedly, Sowcar was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, earlier this week. The actress was rushed to the hospital after her health deteriorated, following which she was receiving intensive care.

Sowcar was an acclaimed actress and has worked predominantly in Telugu and Tamil cinema. She enjoyed a remarkable career spanning several decades, known for her powerful screen presence and versatility, having essayed a range of characters in film and television, and having appeared in more than 400 films across various South Indian languages, including the hits Shavukaru (1950), Puthiya Paravai (1964), Edhir Neechal (1968), Iru Kodugal (1969), and Thillu Mullu (1981).

Her contribution to South Indian cinema remains significant, with several of her films still remembered by fans. Her demise marks the end of an era, leaving behind a lasting legacy of acclaimed performances.
