Christopher Nolan’s decision to premiere The Odyssey in India underscores the country’s rising importance in the global theatrical market. With Hollywood films accounting for an estimated 15–20 percent of India’s box office, industry experts believe the move highlights the increasing role Indian audiences play in the worldwide success of major studio releases.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta said, “India is a big market for Hollywood films. Thus, they can’t overlook India. Secondly, Nolan has shot in India: Mumbai and Jodhpur. That affinity towards India increases. The Odyssey is one of the biggest films of Christopher Nolan and it is probably going to be the biggest at the Box Office among all his films. I saw it on Friday. It is an outstanding, superb blockbuster. People will repeat the film.”

Filmmaker Saurabh Varma echoed similar views, saying India has emerged as one of Hollywood’s strongest theatrical markets. He said, “India has become one of the most important theatrical markets for Hollywood. Christopher Nolan enjoys an unmatched cult following here, and every film he directs becomes a cinematic event. The response to the early screenings of The Odyssey suggests that it could become the biggest film of Nolan’s career.”

Varma cited Oppenheimer’s success in India as a marker for The Odyssey’s India premiere. He added, “Nolan understands the value of the Indian audience. After the success of Oppenheimer, which performed exceptionally well in India, the country has become a key market for premium Hollywood releases. An India premiere is not just symbolic. It reflects the growing influence of Indian moviegoers on the global box office and the importance of the country in the worldwide release strategy for event films.”

Film exhibitor and trade analyst Akkshay Rathie said, “Given the ticket prices and demand in India there’s a high chance that The Odyssey can become not just Christopher Nolan’s biggest opener but also his highest-grossing film regarding the lifetime collections. The euphoria and excitement that there is and the ticket prices that IMAX screens are able to command is incredible. People are turning up and finding those prices worth in huge numbers. If the reports are anything to go by, the film is here to stay and create serious euphoria over the next few weeks. So, keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that The Odyssey can continue the momentum built with the recent films locally and keep the Indian Box Office ticking.”
