Basil Joseph has garnered significant attention for his acting in the 2025 Malayalam film Ponman, which turned out to be a hit. Recently, the actor in an interview opened up about his acting journey and revealed that he stepped into acting from direction because of survival.

In a recent interview, the interviewer praised Basil for his versatility from directing Minnal Murli to rocking with his acting skills in Ponman and asked how he does it. The actor firstly thanked for the acknowledgement and shared, “It’s just happened ma’am, it’s nothing like it.” Upon this, Rukmini Vasanth compliments him that he is naturally gifted, which makes Basil a little shy, and he compliments her back.

Basil explains, “No, but Ponman, it’s just been like direction was my first priority from the beginning itself. I was very ambitious and a dreamer about being a director. How far should I go? Very, like aspiring so much about being a director, trying to push myself.”

“Actor was just accidental for survival at first place because being a director is tough to be a stable income and financially also it’s a little difficult, like you have to wait for actors’ dates for quite a long,” he added.

Opening up on his acting journey, Basil shared, “It just happened because friends started calling to act in their films, and also initially it was a hero’s friend character, so whenever the hero wins, my character will also win, and whenever the hero loses, my character will also lose. So it’s that kind of sidekick allt character who always cracks jokes and has to take care of the comic side of the film, that physical comedy manners, I mean, all those things. Then it just slowly shifted to the lead roles, and that’s where, personally, I also started looking at it more seriously.”
