Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons and a key figure in India’s industrial landscape, has passed away at the age of 86. Earlier this week, he addressed rumors about his health, clarifying through social media that he was undergoing routine medical checks due to his age. He also mentioned that he really appreciates everyone caring about him and that he remains in high spirits.
In a statement, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over Tata’s death, highlighting his remarkable leadership and legacy. “Mr. Ratan Naval Tata was not just a leader for the Tata Group but a personal mentor, guide, and friend. His example of excellence, integrity, and innovation helped expand the group globally, always grounded by its core values.”
Tata took over as chairman of the $100 billion conglomerate in 1991, a group founded by his great-grandfather. Under his leadership, Tata Group saw significant growth, including the founding of Tata Teleservices in 1996 and the public listing of Tata Consultancy Services in 2004.
He held this position until 2012, after which he was named chairman emeritus of several Tata companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals.
Even after retiring, Ratan Tata remained an influential figure, especially on social media, where he shared posts on various causes, particularly animal rights.
Tata’s interests extended beyond business, as he co-produced the 2004 film Aetbaar, a psychological thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham, Bipasha Basu, and Supriya Pilgaonkar.
