The release of the much-awaited “Jana Nayagan” movie is an unexpected hit for Thalapathy Vijay’s latest project. The film’s general release date was set for January 9, 2026, but now it has been postponed indefinitely. The hold-up is linked to the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification), which hasn’t issued a censorship certificate yet due to the film’s series of controversies and legal battles.

The movie became embroiled in a censorship dispute when the CBFC expressed concerns about certain parts possibly “hurting religious sentiments” and about the distorted portrayal of the military. Even though the filmmakers, KVN Productions, made 27 cuts per CBFC’s recommendations to mitigate these concerns, CBFC surprised everyone by referring the matter to the Revision Committee based on an internal complaint.

The situation worsened when the producers decided to file a lawsuit and approached the Madras High Court for relief from the delay. On January 7th, the court held its ruling and declared it would deliver a verdict on January 9th—the very day the film was to be released—thus making it impossible to keep the original release date.

International distributors, including those in the UK, North America, Canada, and Malaysia, have acknowledged the delay, and those who bought tickets in advance are now receiving refunds and facing cancellations. KVN Productions has told its fans that a new release date will be announced as soon as possible.
