Renowned Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away at the age of 84 after battling a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of an era in Hindi cinema, where he stood as one of the most beloved and versatile performers for over five decades.

Asrani’s contribution to Indian cinema is immense. With a career spanning more than 50 years, he appeared in over 350 films across genres, though he was especially celebrated for his impeccable comic timing. One of his most iconic roles was that of the eccentric jailer in the 1975 classic Sholay, where his line “Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain” became a part of Bollywood folklore.

In addition to his memorable roles in films like Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafoo Chakkar, Asrani enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with superstar Rajesh Khanna, featuring in more than 25 films together. His ability to switch effortlessly between comedy and character roles won him critical acclaim and several awards, including multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian.
