Farhan Akhtar’s upcoming war epic, 120 Bahadur, brings to life one of the most heroic yet under-told chapters in Indian military history — the legendary battle of Rezang La. Set against the brutal winter backdrop of the 1962 India–China War, the film promises to immerse audiences in a true story of unmatched courage, where 120 Indian soldiers from the 13 Kumaon Regiment stood their ground against overwhelming Chinese forces.
Here are 5 incredible facts from the Battle of Rezang La that the film will bring alive with stirring cinematic realism:
⸻
1. 120 Soldiers Held Back an Entire Regiment
Outnumbered and outgunned, 120 soldiers — mostly Ahirs from Haryana — fought off waves of attack from a full Chinese regiment. Their defensive stand, led by the indomitable Major Shaitan Singh, was so effective that it remains one of the greatest last stands in military history.
2. They Took Down Over 1,000 Enemy Soldiers
Despite having limited firepower, the Rezang La heroes inflicted massive casualties — over 1,000 PLA soldiers were killed in the onslaught. Their strategic defence and sheer resolve turned the tide of what could’ve been a catastrophic defeat.
3. Our Soldiers Killed 1200 Enemy
The Rezang La heroes stood bravely against a massive Chinese army. The Chinese regiment had 3,000 soldiers, out of which our soldiers killed 1,200. It was an unbelievable ratio of defeat in history.
4. They Fought in Brutal –10°C Temperatures
Fighting at an altitude of 16,000 feet, the Kumaon soldiers faced not just bullets but also bone-numbing cold. As frostbitten fingers pulled triggers and frozen boots clung to rocks, this battle was fought in sub-zero hell.
5. Bodies Were Found Months Later — Still in Firing Position
When a Ladakhi shepherd accidentally stumbled upon the site months after the war, he found the bodies of Indian soldiers still clutching their rifles, frozen in their firing positions — a haunting testament to their final moments of valour.
Now, their extraordinary story comes to life in 120 Bahadur, with Farhan Akhtar portraying Maj Shaitan Singh Bhati PVC. Directed by Razneesh ‘Razy’ Ghai and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar (Excel Entertainment), and Amit Chandrra (Trigger Happy Studios), the film is an Excel Entertainment production.
