Bollywood director Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s Bengali film Lokkhikantopur Local grabs highest rating of 9.8 at Imdb. This seems the highest rating compared to all Bengali films released on 2025. He even beats the rating of his own debut film Binodiini Ekti Natir Upakhyan which released worldwide in Jan 2025.

The film garnered critical acclaim and also marked reunion of Bengali legends Kaushik Ganguly, Rituparna Sengupta and Paoli Dam as actor trio for the first time on screen. Earlier Kaushik Ganguly worked with Rituparna and Paoli Dam as director.

While the Bengali film industry seems to be clearly divided at the latest screening committee vote, an independent filmmaker Ram Kamal’s family drama worked wonders with audiences and critics across Bengal. The film deals with thr ordeals of house helps traveling from suburban Kolkata to city for survival.

This year seems to be the year of debutant makers creating magic at the box office. From Ram Kamal’s Binodiini to Jayabrata’s Academy of Fine Arts (both produced by Pramod Films) audiences are looking for “change” and clearly showing interest in newer breed of makers.

While Jayabrata manged to pull a slasher with comparatively newcomers, Ram Kamal managed to get the biggest ensemble cast of 2025 in Lokkhikantopur Local.

This year established makers like Shibaprasad Mukherjee’s Raktabeej2 and Srijit Mukherjee’s Laho Gauranger Naam Re failed to garner interest amongst regular Bengali audiences compared to their earlier blockbusters.

The year ended on a happy note with Abhijit Sen’s Prajapati 2, the Dev and Mithun Chakraborty franchise, creating a massive response at the box office. The family drama seems to be a hit.
