YRF Spy Universe’s first female-led action film, Alpha, is expected to take a modest start at the box office, with trade estimates ranging between ₹5 crore and ₹8 crore on its opening day. While the pre-release buzz has been lower than earlier YRF Spy Universe titles, trade experts believe the film still has the potential to surprise if audience response is positive.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan estimates an opening in the ₹7-8 crore range. He observed the buzz around Alpha to be subdued compared to previous YRF Spy Universe films.

“Unfortunately, it has faced unnecessary trolling ever since the teaser and trailer were released, which seems to have impacted audience perception to some extent. Frequent postponements of the release also diluted the excitement, as repeated delays often affect recall value and reduce the sense of anticipation among cinegoers,” he said.

Mohan also believes the performance of Alia Bhatt’s last solo action outing could have influenced expectations.

“Alia’s last solo release, Jigra, which was an action film, did not do well at the box office. While Alpha belongs to the much bigger YRF Spy Universe, the underperformance of Jigra may have had some impact on audience confidence regarding her as a solo action lead,” he added.

Trade expert Girish Johar says the film’s opening will ultimately depend on audience feedback.

“It all depends on the word of mouth. If the feedback and audience reception are good, the evening and night shows can see stronger occupancy, which could push the opening higher. At present, I see the film opening at around ₹5 crore,” Johar said.

According to Johar, the film caters more to urban audiences than the mass market.

“I think that’s the nature of the film. It’s a very urban film and not a typical mass commercial entertainer. Besides, it’s a female-led film as well, so that naturally makes a difference. Having said that, Alia Bhatt has delivered several successful films in the past and Sharvari is also a rising star. Friday is only the beginning of its journey.”

Asked whether the female-led narrative has affected the level of excitement, Johar responded, “That certainly makes a difference when it comes to hardcore commercial entertainment. But as a standalone film, I think it is quite decent—nothing exceptional, but nothing disappointing either.”

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala also expects Alpha to open in the ₹5-7 crore range.

“We will see how it performs on Saturday and Sunday and what is the word of mouth. The advance booking looks good, so it should have a decent opening on Friday. After that, everything depends on the reviews and audience response. If they are positive, the film can continue to perform well over the weekend,” Bala said.

He added that films led by male superstars generally enjoy greater pre-release momentum.

“It’s not like films starring male superstars such as Tiger, Pathaan, or War, where the buzz was much higher. Also, the promotional campaign for Alpha began only about two weeks before release.”

Mohan also pointed to the film’s release window as a challenge.

“Alpha arrives in theatres when Welcome To The Jungle is performing well, and Dhamaal 4 is arrived a week later with a strong pre-release buzz. That leaves Alpha sandwiched between two major commercial entertainers,” he said.

Despite the cautious projections, trade remains hopeful that Alpha can overcome its slow start. A strong audience response over the weekend, coupled with the strength of the YRF Spy Universe brand and Alia Bhatt’s star appeal, could still help the film outperform early expectations.
