The Met Gala, a celebrity annual tradition that funds the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has seen many of designer fashion’s most noteworthy and adventurous moments. The launch of the exhibit “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” will be celebrated during the 2022 fête on Monday, May 2. The festival’s motif is “Gilded Glamour,” and Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as chairs. Take a gander at the most legendary Met Gala ensembles prior to the big red carpet.

Lady Gaga 2019

Lady Gaga is always sure to make a spectacular Met Gala entrance. The actress donned a big fuchsia cape cloak designed by her close friend and designer Brandon Maxwell for Embracing Camp: Notes on Fashion. The drama was far from over. The cape was loosened during her live red-carpet appearance, revealing a black strapless bustier dress. This was then removed to reveal a shocking-pink gown. The bra and knickers were then removed, revealing a dazzling bra and knickers.

Princess Diana 1996

Princess Diana made her only grand entrance at the Met Gala in 1996, 3 months following the announcement of her separation from Prince Charles. Princess Diana’s style could be misconstrued as demure by today’s red carpet culture and the Met Ball’s emboldened “naked” dress craze but this dark blue lingerie outfit, designed by then-creative director John Galliano, signified a new, liberated era.

Billy Porter 2019

Billy Porter, star of Pose, knows how to put on an episode of a red carpet appearance. In a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra, the Broadway legend arrived in a sedan seat, hauled into the arms of six semi-exposed men on Monday in May. What’s the major event? The Blonds developed a unique “Sun God” catsuit featuring 10ft wings.

Kim Kardashian 2021

The all-black ensemble that Kim Kardashian’s former husband Kanye West crafted with Balenciaga’s Demna for her to don on the night made one of its world’s most renowned faces literally invisible. Even so, nobody had any doubts as to who was inside. This outfit is deserving of a qualifying spot simply because of the number of memes it spawned.

Billie Eilish 2021

Billie walked into the Met stairs in a frothy homage to Old Hollywood elegance which couldn’t be far away from her neon-green origins, just a few months after her shocking yet stunning British Vogue cover transformation. Oscar de la Renta’s blush ballgown was based on the dress Marilyn Monroe donned for the 1951 Academy Awards.
