Wallows from Los Angeles had already developed an ’80s-inspired style with undertones of post-punk, synth pop, and power pop as well as more grounded modern bedroom pop by the time they started releasing songs under that moniker in 2017. 2019 saw the release of Nothing Happens, their debut album, which was helped along by the alternative single “Are You Bored Yet?” with Clairo, which peaked at number 75 on the Billboard 200. With the release of their second long-player, Tell Me That It’s Over, which was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, the group debuted on the Billboard 200 once more in 2020.

After band member and actor Dylan Minnette had a major role in the teen drama 13 Reasons Why Wallows initially gained more widespread public recognition in 2017. However, Wallows had already been around for a while before the news. Wallows, which consists of singer/guitarist Minnette, singer/guitarist Braeden Lemasters (also an actor), and drummer Cole Preston, was first inspired by a music lesson that the friends did together. By the time they were in their teens, they were performing under different guises and participated in the 2011 Warped Tour. The band members were juggling their musical aspirations with Minnette and Lemasters’ burgeoning acting careers during this time.

Before signing with Atlantic, they released a few stand-alone tracks in 2017 under the name Wallows. 2018 saw the release of the label’s first EP, the John Congleton-produced Spring. It contained the hit “Pictures of Girls,” which reached the Top 40 on the Billboard chart for alternative music. The band’s song “Are You Bored Yet?” featuring Clairo peaked at number seven on the same list in the early months of 2019. Nothing Happens, the group’s full-length debut, was released on Atlantic that March and featured it. On their way to a string of sold-out performances at rock clubs in the United States and Canada, they made a guest appearance at the 2019 Coachella Festival after the release.

Through the first half of 2020, several singles were released, including the alternative Top 30 smash “OK” and a rendition of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends.” Later that year, Wallows’ third EP, Remote, was made available. The group worked with another Grammy-winning producer, Ariel Rechtshaid, to create their subsequent album (Vampire Weekend, Adele). It debuted on Atlantic in March 2022 under the title Tell Me That It’s Over.
