Neeraj was a professional Muay Thai fighter who represented Kerala on the domestic fighting circuit. He competed in bouts against athletes from across the country and was a familiar name in the state’s growing MMA and Muay Thai fraternity.
Among his recorded appearances was a welterweight bout at the MMAAK Fight Series’ Gym War event in Calicut in 2023. Neeraj went up against Pravin Wagh in the contest. After all three rounds, the fight was decided by the judges, with Wagh earning a split-decision win.
Following the news of Neeraj’s death, members of the fighting community took to social media to remember him. Sri Lankan jiu-jitsu coach Kaz De Silva shared a message emphasizing the importance of looking after one another, particularly when dealing with mental health struggles.
De Silva spoke about martial arts being more than just competition, describing it as a space that can teach discipline, resilience and brotherhood. He also encouraged anyone experiencing emotional difficulties to speak with someone they trust, whether that is a friend, coach or family member, instead of facing those struggles alone.
Ayesha Shroff, wife of actor Jackie Shroff, also expressed her condolences through LockerRoom’s post. Fighters and other members of the combat sports fraternity, including Meshak Ajak, Niranjan Phanjoubam and Imran Shaikh, also paid tribute to Neeraj.
While Neeraj’s career was largely part of India’s domestic combat sports circuit, the tributes following his reported death reflect the impact he had within the fighting community. His death has also sparked renewed conversations about mental health and the need for athletes to have the space and support to speak about personal struggles.
