Cricket is a game that may take a person from rags to riches in today’s world. Various franchise leagues, like the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and others, are held around the world.

There is a lot of commerce and money linked with the sport, and an international player will almost certainly have a secure financial future when he retires.

Cricketers’ financial future after retirement used to be in the dark before the emergence of million-dollar leagues.

Let’s take a look at cricketers who went from being wealthy to being poor today:

1. Arshad Khan

Former Pakistani off-spinner Arshad Khan made his international debut in 1997 against the West Indies.

The 6ft 4inch tall cricketer has played in nine Tests and 58 One-Day Internationals for his country.

Khan was a consistent bowler, but he was never able to establish himself in the playing XI.

After retiring, the off-spinner worked as a cab driver in Sydney, Australia.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will hire the former cricketer as the bowling coach of the Pakistan women’s national side later in 2020.

2. Adam Hollioake

Former English cricketer Adam Hollioake made his debut against Pakistan in 1996. Hollioke, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, represented England in four Tests and 35 One-Day Internationals. He also led the team to the Sharjah Cup win in 1997.

Hollioake last played for his country in 2007, after which he returned to Australia to run his family’s business. His company’s financial status deteriorated after the worldwide recession of 2008, and he was declared bankrupt in 2011.

After that, the former cricketer began a career as a mixed martial artist, making his debut in 2012.

3. Matthew Sinclair

Former New Zealand cricketer Matthew Sinclair is most remembered for his 214-run innings. Sinclair played in 33 Tests and 54 One-Day Internationals for New Zealand before retiring in July 2013.

The batter, who was born in Australia, had a promising start to his career, but his inconsistent performances cost him a spot in the team.

After his retirement, he was jobless for a spell. Because he did not complete his schooling before commencing to play cricket, he needed to find a job to support himself.

He is currently working as a real estate salesperson in Napier, where he is making ends meet.
