Antoine Griezmann delivered a heartfelt apology to Atlético Madrid supporters on May 17, 2026, admitting that his 2019 move to FC Barcelona was a mistake.
The moment came during Griezmann’s farewell ceremony at the Metropolitano Stadium following Atlético Madrid’s final home match of the 2025–26 season, amid reports linking the French forward with a move to Major League Soccer side Orlando City SC.
Addressing supporters inside the stadium, Griezmann reflected on his controversial departure from Atlético and thanked fans for welcoming him back after his return in 2021.
“I ask you for forgiveness again. I didn’t realize the affection I had here. It was a mistake. I came to my senses and did everything to return and enjoy it again,” Griezmann said during the tribute.
Born in Mâcon, France, Griezmann began his professional career with Real Sociedad before joining Atlético Madrid in 2014. He went on to become one of the defining players of manager Diego Simeone’s era, helping the club win the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and Spanish Super Cup. Griezmann also played a major role in France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning squad.
After leaving Atlético Madrid for Barcelona in a high-profile transfer in 2019, Griezmann returned to the Spanish club two years later following a difficult spell in Catalonia. Since his comeback, he rebuilt his connection with supporters through his performances and leadership on the pitch.
Griezmann leaves Atlético as the club’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most influential players of the Diego Simeone era. Fans at the Metropolitano applauded the farewell tribute as clips from the speech quickly spread across social media.
