Andrey Rublev, one of Roger Federer’s tennis peers, described him as “unreal.” Last Sunday, Federer turned 40, making him 17 years older than the Russian superstar. Rublev expressed his surprise at the Swiss legend’s quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon in July, despite not having played tennis in over a year.

Federer has been dealing with a knee ailment for the past 18 months, and in 2020, he had two separate surgeries on his right knee. “I’m sure I’m not the first to say it, but [Roger Federer’s Wimbledon quarterfinal run] was something amazing, something unbelievable,” Rublev said. He’s the only one who has a chance.”

Rublev continued to laud the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s career and abilities, saying he wasn’t surprised by his performance at Wimbledon. “By the way, I’m not surprised since this is Roger; he breaks so many records,” he explained. He is viewed as one of the all-time great tennis players. And that’s exactly what he’s accomplishing—incredible.”

it’s Federer’s appearance in that match that made him the oldest player in the Open era to reach that stage of the tournament, surpassing Australian Ken Rosewall’s record from 1974. Federer has not competed since falling in a dismal quarter-final at SW19. In a match that contained only his second 6-0 set loss since 2000, he was defeated in straight sets by Hubert Hurkacz.
