19/12/2020 will be considered to be a black day in the history of Indian test cricket. The first test match of India’s tour of Australia ended with Australia winning it with 8 wickets left. However, during the second batting inning of India, Virat-led team India only managed to score 36 runs for 9 wickets down. After the 10th wicket, Mohammed Shami was declared retired hurt, India ended their batting with only 36 on the board making it their lowest test total. Before this, India’s lowest test total was 42 against England in 1974.
With Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal opening for India in the second inning, Prithvi ended up losing his wicket in a similar way to his wicket in the first inning. With few overs left to conclude the day, Virat sent in India’s Nights-watchman, Jasprit Bumrah to defend the batting against Australian bowling. Bumrah successfully managed to do so and the 2nd day ended in favour of India as they were still leading.
On the 3rd day, Australian bowlers cleaned up the Indian batting line-up. Starting with Bumrah giving an easy catch to Pat Cummins, Australia’s pace attack took many of Indian batsmen’s edge, and Tim Paine, the Captain did an excellent job behind the stumps. India’s new wall, Pujara went for a duck.
Ajinkya Rahane, the vice-captain also lost his wicket without scoring any runs. Captain Kohli lost his wicket in a very unfortunate manner and Hazelwood ran him out on the Non-strikers end. None of the Indian batsmen scored runs in double digits. Australia only needed 75 runs to win the first test match, and they did it without any difficulty.
