Candid chat with Sunil Grover

I can't work at the cost of my dignity: Sunil Grover

Popular comedy artist, Sunil Grover, who was in the news for a long time regarding his fracas with Kapil Sharma, will soon be seen in Salman Khan’s much-awaited film, Bharat.

“It is a different role in the sense that I am not doing the normal over the top, caricaturish stuff (which in itself is tough). Rather, it is more everyday stuff. Also, it is not only comic, but there are other elements as well.”

When asked if doing a film with superstar Salman Khan can change an actor’s game, he says, “It varies from artist to artist. I am happy to be associated with a good project.”

Sunil, who has been doing fun stuff for years (the first film was Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha, way back in 1998), is very happy at the level of comedy in the desi entertainment scene. “A lot of good content is being churned out. Some might question the alleged below the belt jokes, but then again, it also reflects audience tastes. I am not a big buff of the same, preferring what I do.”

“I am really gung-ho about the future for the simple fact that so many options are available, with the digital scene also opening up,” added Sunil, whose last film Patakha sadly did not make any noise at the Box Office.

Sunil would not mind returning to TV or trying his hand in web shows if something juicy comes his way. Point out that his last Star Plus show, Kanpur Wale Khuranas, also tanked, and he says, “It was a short project; and as far as working or not, these things are not in our control. Viewers are the ultimate masters.” He had first gained fiction name and fame courtesy Guttur Gu on SAB TV.

Ask him about his face-off with a former colleague, Kapil (worked together in Comedy Circus, Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show), and he says, “Everything happens due to destiny. We don’t plan controversies, as you might call them. I was out of work for a long time but now I am back. There are phases of ups and downs in an actor’s life. We just need to keep working with full passion, but yes, keeping our integrity and self-respect intact.”

In closing, he refused to comment on whether the much-awaited Bharat and The Kapil Sharma Show integration episode has been shot or not, where both artists will be seen in the same frame.
