Actor Dushyant Wagh, who essays the role of Banku in Star Plus‘ Anupamaa, by Rajan Shahi, believes that an artist’s true motivation always comes from the craft itself. Having spent over two decades in the entertainment industry, the actor says the excitement of facing the camera every day remains unchanged for him.
Talking about what keeps him going, Dushyant shares, “I guess the driving force of any artist is his or her art. The fact that I’m going to perform in front of the camera itself is my driving force. I genuinely enjoy acting, and the best part is that this character and this show are giving me ample opportunities to perform every single day. Every scene has something new, something different, something challenging. And with such a supportive cast and team, working every day becomes fun. What more can you ask for?”
The actor also reveals that his off-screen bond with the cast has become even stronger lately, especially after Banku’s storyline shifted to the Shah family setup. “Nowadays, Banku is staying with the Shah family along with Digvijay sir, so we all shoot together. Earlier, it was mostly Sachin sir, Rupali di, Aveera and me. But now the entire family is involved in the scenes, and getting to know everyone better has become my favourite part whenever we are not shooting,” he says.
For Dushyant, being part of a long-running and successful show like Anupamaa is also a learning experience. “Every day teaches you something or the other. These things can’t always be explained in words, but they contribute to your knowledge, performance and wisdom. Working with such veteran and senior actors is like going to university every day. ‘Jitna seekho utna kam hi hai,’” he says with a smile.
Recalling one of the emotionally draining sequences from the show, Dushyant admits that certain scenes can be mentally exhausting. “The scene where Pakhi vents out her anger on Banku because she was upset seeing Banku and Ishani talking — OMG, it was taxing. Whenever you perform scenes involving pain, hurt or crying, they consume you emotionally. But I’m glad the scene turned out superbly,” he shares.
Speaking about his family’s reaction to his performance, the actor says his mother continues to be his biggest critic. “My mom is loving it. She has been my critic from day one. Even today, she calls me after every episode and gives me feedback. Dad is happy that I’m part of such an iconic show and proudly talks about it in his circle,” he says.
When asked about awards and recognition, Dushyant gives an honest and refreshing perspective. “Awards are mostly managed, so if they decide to give me one, I’m sure I’ll get one,” he says candidly, before adding, “It’s been 26–27 years in this industry, and from my very first project, I’ve never worked with the thought of winning awards. What matters most to me is the audience. They’ve stayed with me throughout my journey, and many of them continue to support me even today. That connection is perpetual, and I value that above everything else.”
