World Music Day, celebrated on the 21st of June, serves as a heartfelt tribute to music—the one universal language that transcends borders and requires no translation. It embodies a rich tapestry of rhythm interwoven with cherished memories, melodies infused with deep-seated emotions, and harmonies rooted in diverse traditions. From the vibrant celebrations in bustling streets to the tranquil solitude of quiet rooms, music has pulsated as the very heartbeat of human existence. It connects generations, offers solace to aching hearts, and ignites sparks of inspiration in the most unexpected moments. In honour of this special occasion, actress Mohak Matkar, who plays the lead role in Zee TV‘s Saru, shares her journey with music. She reflects on the powerful melodies that have inspired her, both professionally and personally.

She says, “Music has always been more than background noise for me—it’s been my life’s soundtrack. I began learning Hindustani classical music as a child, but what truly deepened my love for it was my mom. She would sit beside me during riyaaz and hum softly, to keep me company. The radio had stopped working, so my mom and I began singing an old Lata Mangeshkar song. I joined in, and slowly everyone did, even the driver! That drive felt magical—like time had paused and we were floating on music. That’s what music does—it wraps up love, laughter, and nostalgia into one moment.”

“For me, World Music Day is about revisiting that warmth and passing it on—through every sur and taal I carry within.”
