In keeping with their aim to always surprise viewers, Colors TV once again presents an interesting and unique romantic drama, Spy Bahu produced by Ashvini Yardi’s Viniyard Films. Based in the city of Jamnagar, the show revolves around the story of a naïve yet resilient happy-go-lucky girl, Sejal (played by Sana Sayyad) who looks forward to building a secure future for her family. This perfect life of hers is short-lived as she begins to get traumatizing flashes from her past.  As she discovers the truth about herself, Sejal’s life takes an adventurous turn and finds herself in a situation where she is asked to carry out a secret mission. She is recruited by a senior intelligence officer to spy on a man named Yohan Nanda (played by Sehban Azim) and his family, who is a suspected terrorist. Using her charming persona, she manages to infiltrate the Nanda house and starts observing Yohan like a hawk. But her mission gets vastly complicated as she starts falling in love with Yohan’s mysterious yet charismatic nature.

It begins with a happy family setup in Kulgam in Kashmir. However, within a few seconds after being attacked by an anti-Indian terrorist group, the happiness turns into sadness. The father, mother, and grandmother are brutally shot dead by the terrorists. One of the two children of the house is abducted by them while the little girl remains safe and unharmed by the terrorists, as her mother manages to lock her in a cupboard. The girl, all of 5 years old is later saved by an Indian anti-terrorism squad who further helps her escape the brutality. The cute little girl Sejal is then adopted by a Gujarati family. Unfortunately, the head of the family, their Baa, is absolutely against her son and daughter-in-law adopting a girl child.

The show is an intriguing tale wrapped with family drama. The storyline seems gripping till now and has already succeeded in raising the intrigue quotient in the minds of viewers. Sana Sayyad is perfect to play Sejal, she can easily pull off a simple girl-next-door look with aplomb and assurance. She easily convinces us as a sweet demure girl and also aces the Gujarati accent. The first glimpse of the male lead Sehban Azim, who plays the role of Yohan, was indeed hot. The guy with his fitness freak body has already left us drooling and we are now curious to see more of his chemistry with Sejal. His character is mysterious and hooks us to the plot. The lead actors along with the supporting cast that includes Ayub Khan, Sanjeev Jogtiyani, Bhavana Balsaver, Shubha Khote, Devashish Chandiramani, Manas Shah, Krunal Pandit, Kiran Karmarkar, Parineeta Borthakur, among others, make quite an impressive mark in the first episode of the show.

At a few points, the show reminds us of movies Raazi and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. When the small girl enters the Gujarati family, she is served ‘dhoklas’. However, she runs to an egg stall and demands to eat it. Well, the new parents get shocked to know that the girl loves non-veg food. This scene reminds us of the little Munni from Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Apart from that, when Sejal enters the Nanda house, we see a resemblance with Alia Bhatt from Raazi. Sana as Sejal has impressed us a lot. Be it her way of styling outfits or her accent or her performance when she is unconformable in a mini skirt in a scene, she has outdone everything.

Overall we enjoyed watching Spy Bahu. From the dialogues to the direction to performance, everything has been in place. It has started off on a good note and has created a good amount of suspense in its first episode. We really hope that the thrill factor continues in the show.

We, at IWMBuzz, would rate it 4/5.
