Sony Entertainment Television is a channel known for its hit shows, whether fiction or reality. In particular, the channel has always done better with reality shows such as Kaun Banega Crorepati, Indian Idol, and India’s Got Talent. Additionally, the channel has done a good job in reality, but the shows’ ratings are not good anymore.
Despite the declining TRP ratings of reality shows, the channel has been consistently bringing new seasons, but the situation is not the same with fiction shows. As fiction shows launched this year, all went off-air due to poor response: the historic drama Prithviraj Chauhan, the new season of the channel’s hit fiction show Bade Acche Lagte Hain-Naya Season, and Mere Sai.
Adding to the list is Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hai, which premiered recently but went off after almost a month. Also, the crime investigation show CID 2 has wrapped. And all because of the channel’s declining ratings. With two more fiction shows going off air now, the channel is left only with reality shows Kaun Banega Crorepati, Indian Idol, and India’s Got Talent.
Though work is in progress on new fiction shows, right now, we see a strange scenario: fiction shows failing to align with viewers’ tastes on the channel, leading to their failure.
With Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hai and CID 2 wrapping up, only three reality shows are left: Kaun Banega Crorepati, Indian Idol, and India’s Got Talent, and this is the first time that only reality shows are on a channel. Surprisingly, all three reality shows have also not performed better on the TRP chart, whereas in previous years, they were huge hits and recorded good numbers.
It’s a strange and rare scenario for a major GEC to be functioning entirely on reality shows. And now all eyes are on how the channel maintains its momentum again.
