Writer and creator Ishika Shahi does not make shows about easy emotions. Her latest project, Tu Yaa Koi Nahi, now streaming on the official YouTube channel of Director’s Kut Production, is built around the kind of love that leaves no room for anything else, consuming, selfless, and, at times, devastating. With a cast led by Priyanshi Yadav and Mishkat Verma, Ishika talks about what the show is really about, the characters she built from the ground up, and why she believes this is the most layered work she has done so far.

The title itself sets the tone before a single frame plays. She said, “Even the name ‘Tu Yaa Koi Nahi’ suggests that if it’s not you, then it’s nobody else. In the story, you’ll see that each character places love above everyone and everything else. It’s about the most selfless and passionate form of love, where sometimes reality itself begins to blur, especially for Myra.”

“In a world where we have countless options and conditions attached to relationships, this show reminds us that love should be selfless. Every character faces dilemmas where, in the end, they choose the person they love above themselves. I hope the show rekindles that passion and romance, reminding people what love can truly be,” he added.

Getting Myra’s emotional world right was the project’s central challenge, and Ishika is candid about just how much thought went into it. She said, “Without repeating too much, the biggest challenge was portraying Myra’s emotional reality. When you’re young and experiencing first love, everything feels intense. There’s passion, impulsiveness, and sometimes even a little foolishness. There were moments when Priyanshi asked me if Myra was too immature, but I honestly felt that Myra is simply madly in love.”

“Initially, Yash believes she’s crazy, but once he learns about her past and the trauma she has endured, he realises she isn’t mad; she’s just consumed by love. As the story progresses, viewers will see that Myra has gone through immense pain. Sometimes, when people suffer deeply, they create a reality of their own to survive,” she added.

Ishika further shared that as the story progresses, the show explores Myra’s mental state. She said, “In the very first episode, Myra is on the verge of ending her life. The only thing that stops her is the hope that Ansh is alive. Sometimes, people enter your life as blessings and remind you why you should keep living. At this stage of the story, Myra’s journey is about finding a reason to live again. Love has completely consumed her.”

She has never been drawn to perfect characters, and she is clear about why. She said, “I think audiences today connect only with flawed characters. There’s very little space left for the perfect hero or heroine because we, as human beings, are inherently flawed. That actually makes my job easier because I can create characters who feel authentic.”

“Every character in the show has flaws, makes mistakes, and faces personal struggles. Yet, despite their imperfections, viewers will still empathise with them and understand where they’re coming from,” Ishika ended.
