OTT platform JioHotstar is known for dominating in original content production. But the platform once appeared to be a strong contender in the originals race, with previous years bringing several notable projects and returning franchises like Reeta Sanyal, The Magic Of Shiri, Cadets, Life Hol Gayi, Criminal Justice: A Family Matter, and others that formed the platform as a steady originals pipeline, with the latter even emerging as the most-watched streaming original in H1 2025.

However, compared with the initial momentum, JioHotstar’s original content slate in 2026 feels more like a slow burn. Though releases like Chiraiya, Pritam, Pedro, and Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar Season 2 caught attention, the platform produced a feverish number of originals over half the year. Overuse of similar crime-and-survival narratives has limited its chances of achieving undisputed market dominance.

Now, Aneet Padda-starrer Hunkkaar is set to arrive on September 25, and from the teaser, it appears to be a stale drama. And this makes us note that the frequency and buzz around Hindi originals on the platform seem noticeably quieter.

Traditionally strong in balancing originals with television and blockbuster content, JioHotstar now risks looking somewhat stale in an increasingly aggressive OTT originals market.

In conclusion, JioHotstar may not have lost the originals war, but it has clearly lost momentum. After a strong hold on its original strategy in previous years, it now feels slower and less unique.

Do you all feel the same? Given the platform’s reach and credibility, its consumers certainly deserve more original stories.
