A horrific video of a man being chased and attacked by an alligator in a Brazilian lake has gone viral on Twitter. The event occurred on Saturday in Campo Grande’s Lago da Amor, which is popular with tourists but is off-limits to swimmers due to the presence of alligators. The swimmer in issue appears to have ignored the warning warnings and proceeded to swim in the lake.

At around 4.40 p.m., Willyan Caetano, who caught the incident on his phone, observed the man entering the perilous waters. An alligator began creeping quickly across the water towards him shortly after. He swam as quickly as he could back to shore before the alligator attacked and bit him.

Caetano, the man who captured the footage said, “Suddenly, to my surprise, an alligator starts chasing him. He tried to swim fast to get away, but the alligator managed to reach him and land a violent bite on the man’s arm, who came out of the water with his arm all bloody and very scared, saying he didn’t know there was an alligator,” said Caetano.

Locals gathered around the injured man following the incident, according to reports, and summoned Mobile Emergency Care Service. Except for minor injuries to one of his limbs, the swimmer remained unharmed.

Meanwhile, a video of the attack has gone viral, with 196 thousand views, 7859 likes, and over 1400 retweets, indicating that the incident has horrified people. Others questioned why the man would enter an alligator-infested body of water.

Garapeira Marinalva da Silva, a second eyewitness who has been manning a sugarcane juice stand at Lago do Amor for the past five years, claimed this is the first time she has seen anyone walk into the water in that period. According to Campo Grande News, he said:

“Sometimes, children go there, but then we tell them that there is an alligator and that it’s dirty and they come back.”
