Governor: The Silent Savior is a political-economic thriller inspired by India’s most critical economic crisis in 1990. The film transforms the real event into an intense, emotional, gripping, and thrilling cinematic experience. It is a must-watch film, especially for those with high educational, political, and economic interests.
Plot
The film follows the tale of an IAS officer, A. Ramanan, played by Manoj Bajpayee, who unexpectedly gets appointed as the governor of ‘Rashtriya Bank of India’. Well, this isn’t the key factor, but it is the fact that he is appointed at a time when the country is facing a severe financial crisis. And at this point, foreign exchange reserves continue to run short, alarming the urgency to make a strong decision. With Ramanan beginning his task to handle the financial downfall and when it seems the crisis may settle, the tables turn, leading to the situation turning upside down, and how Ramanan balances this crisis is a treat to watch.
Based on true events, the film works and captivates viewers. What helps it resonate is the point when the film shifts to the emotional aspect of governance. The film convincingly shows the conversation between the governor and deputy that feels real. Whether you hold interest in finance and economics or not, these factors in the film are a must-watch thing that not only tells the true story of the big event in India history but also the presence of mind and intelligence needed to deal with a situation like the 1990 economic crisis.
However, what lacks in the film is enough drama and tension that an economic thriller like Governor needs; this factor dulls out some portion despite its gripping narrative.
Director Chinmay Mandlekar attempts to show the tense moments of the 1990 economic crisis with fine detailing. From cinematography, mounting pressure, to showcasing the uncertainty, the film does portray the urgency woven in a thrilling narrative that keeps viewers gripped.
The biggest strength of Governor isn’t the plot but actor Manoj Bajpayee, who shines like a complete star in this intense political economic thriller. He performs his character with ease, showcasing his maturity, control, confidence, sincerity, and emotions. The key point was the way he commands the South Indian accent. Yet again, he proves why he is hailed as one of the finest stars in the entertainment world today.
Actor Noushad Mohamed Kunju, with his presence, brings meaning, while Adah Sharma as a journalist is captivating. She commands attention with her character arc.
Overall, Governor is a must-watch. The film attempts to tell an important story of Indian history that scores well, gripping viewers with how it moves, but in terms of drama, it falls short at some points.
IWMBuzz rates Governor 3 out of 5 stars.
