A little-known detail about Rahul Roy’s breakthrough film Aashiqui has come to light through filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.
Speaking about the 1990 musical romance, Bhatt revealed that Roy’s dialogues were dubbed by actor Aditya Pancholi. Explaining why Pancholi was brought in, Bhatt said, “Rahul Roy ki awaaz dub ki thi Aditya Pancholi ji ne. Kyunki logon ko uski awaaz achhi nahi lagi thi.”
Bhatt further revealed that Pancholi did not charge for the dubbing work. “Aditya did it free of cost,” he said, adding that Pancholi was already working with him on another film.
Explaining the connection, Bhatt said, “And he was doing a film for me, Saathi, that’s why.”
The revelation offers a glimpse into one of the lesser-known aspects of Aashiqui, which went on to establish Rahul Roy as a major Bollywood star. While the actor became synonymous with the film, Bhatt’s account suggests that Pancholi’s voice was an important behind-the-scenes contribution to Roy’s dialogue scenes.
Aashiqui became a landmark romantic musical, with its songs achieving enormous popularity and Rahul Roy gaining instant recognition. Decades later, Bhatt’s revelation has brought renewed attention to the unusual story behind Roy’s voice in the film.
