More than four decades after Saaransh introduced him to Hindi cinema, Anupam Kher is set to return to the franchise in a new role. The veteran actor will direct Saaransh 2, with the film expected to go on floors next year.

Confirming the development, Kher shared that the sequel is being planned for next year. The script is being developed by Mahesh Bhatt along with his writing team, Surhita Das and Shweta.

Directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Rajshri Productions, Saaransh was released in theatres in 1984. The film marked Anupam Kher’s acting debut and remains one of the most celebrated performances of his career, with Kher portraying the unforgettable character of B.V. Pradhan.

Interestingly, the actor’s casting in the original film was far from certain. It has long been reported that Rajshri Productions considered replacing the newcomer with veteran actor Sanjeev Kumar. However, Mahesh Bhatt remained committed to his decision and convinced the producers to retain Anupam Kher in the lead role—a move that ultimately became a landmark moment in Hindi cinema.
