Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta passes away, allegedly by suicide. As per the reports, the award-winning director died after falling from the roof of a six-story residential building at Hindustan Park near Gariahat on Wednesday, May 28, 2026. Following this, he was rushed to a private hospital at 1.15 in the afternoon, but upon arrival at the hospital, the director was declared dead.

Reportedly, Anik died by suicide as per the handwritten one-page letter found on the terrace. In his letter, the director addressed his Swedish-based daughter and also clarified that no one is to be blamed for his death. The police officials have sent the letter for verification of the handwriting.

As soon as the news of Anik’s death surfaced, Bengali industry actors expressed their grief, mourning the director’s demise.

Abir Chatterjee, in an interview with The Telegraph Online, said, “Anik da was far too intelligent, far too passionate, and far too full of life for us to say goodbye to him this early.”

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, in his tribute on X, wrote, “Saddened by the untimely demise of renowned filmmaker Anik Dutta. His contributions towards Bengali Cinema are priceless. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. I trust the Kolkata police will investigate and unearth the mysterious circumstances shrouding his sudden death.”

Prosenjit Chatterjee, talking to Zoom, remembers Anik Dutta, “I do not know what to say. I am not able to come to terms with the fact that Anik is no more and that too in such a manner. This is a huge loss for the Bengali film industry. I have still not been able to think normally since getting the news. He was not only a good filmmaker but he was an extremely intelligent individual who could regale you with stories. The passing of such a talent in such an uncanny manner is extremely shocking. I am at a loss for words. I have known him for many years.”
