Universal Pictures once again breathes life into The Mummy franchise, and a new sequel will see Brendan Fraser back in the role of Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as his wife, Evelyn O’Connell. The plans ignore the 2008 sequel, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which does not feature the storylines preferred by Weisz and Fraser and was seen as nothing more than a commercial tie-in to the Beijing Olympics.

The actor has indeed confirmed that he is preparing to shoot the development he originally envisioned after The Mummy Returns in 2001, hence he is treating the upcoming picture as the real fourth part of the saga. The studio is speeding up the process to leverage Fraser’s newfound fame after his Oscar win for The Whale and the popularity of the 1999–2001 period and cast coming back, as per a report by Deadline.

Fraser noting that he has been waiting for 20 years to make the film, stated, “But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want,” per Deadline.

Still, no director, writer, or release date has been disclosed. However, both lead actors are already secured, and the negotiations are progressing.
