Jim Carrey struggled with depression and lived in a state of low despair. His years on Prozac simply served to assist him in putting on a mask for society, his family, and his job. Medication didn’t appear to address any problems for him; instead, they seemed to make him a “better person” so that others wouldn’t have to cope with the mess. “It feels like a low level of sadness that you’re in,” Carrey says openly about life on Prozac. “You’re not getting any answers, but you’re getting by and smiling at work…but you’re in a state of mild despair.”

Jim Carrey recognized that taking Prozac was a waste of time and decided to quit taking it. He then went on to abstain from all narcotics, alcohol, and even coffee in his daily life. Instead of using these substances, Carrey used spirituality to help him cope with his despair. He is enthralled by the beauty of the world, and he is also passionate about religion – not a fragmented version of awakening, mind you, but a full manifestation of his ideas, regardless of whether or not he is labeled a fanatic. Carrey responded,

“I’m a Buddhist,” when asked if he was a Buddhist. “I’m a Buddhist, a Christian, and a Muslim…,” he says. “Whatever you want me to be, I’ll be it. It all depends on whether you’re in a loving or unloving environment. You can’t help but be cheerful when you’re with me.”
