Michael Anthony (@manthony783), a professional makeup artist, has worked with Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Ava Max, and Shanina Shaik. His daring, colorful, and experimental approach stands out in a world of identikit smokey eyes and scarlet lips. Consider Ariana’s Rain On Me music video with Lady Gaga, which used a dazzling white negative-space liner. Michael was the one who came up with that idea. He also orchestrated Ari’s look for Positions and 34+35, in which she channeled her inner ’60s Fembot.

In her interview, Ariana even included him while discussing the best beauty tips she’d received. “My makeup artist, Manthony (who is wonderful), gave me a lovely little button, nose contour thing,” Ari explained, her ring finger touching the end of her nose. We asked Michael for all of his insider knowledge on the tips and trends we should keep an eye on.

How do you keep your clients’ makeup looking great until they wash it off, given that it has to work under some very extreme conditions?

Skin prep is crucial, and I learned early on that wiping off extra moisturizer or serum with a sponge before applying foundation works in your favor if you want your makeup to last longer. The method of “baking” or “setting” using loose powder has been tried and tested, and it works wonderfully. Finally, a fine-mist makeup setting spray helps to keep everything in place.

What advice would you provide to folks who want to try something new with their makeup?

I believe that the most straightforward method to experiment with your makeup is to use a BOLD lip color. Perhaps a bright orange like the Velvet Matte Lip Colour Lipstick in Miss Loubi or a stunning pink like Loubilaque Lip Lacquer.
