There’s a new silky fascination in the cacophonous world of Bollywood cinema music. Amit Trivedi is quickly becoming a trendsetter, not simply the person Anurag Kashyap handed a break to. Some have nicknamed him the next big thing, while others have referred to him as a “killer musician” and even the heir apparent to AR Rahman, the guy who has reinvented cinema music since the 1990s.

Comparisons are unavoidable, even if they are premature. Trivedi, like Rahman, is a guy of few words but many unforgettable tunes. And, like the maestro, he works on his music at strange hours in his Mumbai garage studio.

While there are differing viewpoints about vocalist Trivedi, there is universal admiration for the music composer. His free-flowing usage of Indian traditional instruments, sometimes over a clearly Western rock and electronica basis, has established an entirely new environment for cinema music. He’s brought in a slew of fresh vocalists who have effectively shattered the mold of honey-coated vocals that had previously been popular.

“Amit is both anchored and forward-thinking. His musical integrity is impeccable… His tones are clean and uncluttered. In this day of noise pollution, it takes a lot of guts and conviction to produce such music,” says writer and performer Swanand Kirkire, who penned for Trivedi’s compositions in the critically acclaimed Kai Po Che! (2013). In Motwane’s Lootera, he also performed Trivedi’s lovely baul-based song Monta Re.

Let’s have a look at some of the most memorable songs of Amit Trivedi
