Simon Cowell put five singing aspirants together on “The X Factor U.K.” on July 23, 2010. Those were the members of One Direction. They went on to reach unfathomable success internationally, selling out stadiums and recording Top 10 songs including “Story of My Life,” “Best Song Ever,” and “Drag Me Down,” despite finishing third in the TV competition. It wasn’t all roses, though. Zayn Malik abruptly departed the band in 2015, and the remaining members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson announced their break later that year.
One Direction had a six-year run that ended in 2016 when Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne went solo, and Zayn Malik had previously left the group.
