India’s newly appointed ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer may be sidelined for at least three weeks following an injury to his left rib cage sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

The incident occurred when Iyer took a sharp catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. The impact reportedly caused a “jerk” on his ribs, forcing him to leave the field. He was immediately taken to a local hospital for scans during the match.

A source close to the team revealed, “Shreyas was taken to the hospital for scans during the match itself. As per initial diagnosis, there has been a jerk and he will have to be out of action for a minimum of three weeks.”

This development puts Iyer’s participation in doubt for India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa, which begins on November 30 in Ranchi.

Team management and medical staff are monitoring his condition closely. If the recovery takes longer than expected, selectors may have to name a replacement for the vice-captain in the ODI squad.

Iyer, who recently regained form and leadership responsibility, will be hoping for a quick recovery as India builds momentum ahead of a packed cricketing calendar leading into 2026.
