It takes something extraordinary to bring people together in a country like India, which is driven by caste, creed, sex, and racial differences. Cricket is on the top of that very shortlist, and no one stands taller in this sport than the renowned master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, dubbed “the god of Indian cricket” by many. He swept every cricket fan off their feet over his 25 years in the game, infusing the crowd with true passion every time he walked the field. Sachin Tendulkar’s strong morals and deep interest in giving back to society are less well-known, but no less amazing, than his astounding achievements on the cricket field.

Here, we look at the maestro’s services to society outside of the concert hall, and we can’t help but appreciate him even more, not only for his talent but also for his character.

1. Batting for charity

Sachin has set a number of records over his illustrious career. His hundredth century, against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla stadium in Mirpur, was one of the most acclaimed of his career. No one has ever come close to matching the ‘century of hundreds’ in international cricket before. The master blaster celebrated his achievement by auctioning his bat and giving the proceeds to charity.

2. Daughter’s big day

Every year, Sachin’s daughter Sara’s birthday is commemorated in the slums of Mumbai. Sachin’s desire to give back to society is reflected in this low-key yet meaningful event.

3. Awareness ads for free

According to a Sportskeeda article, Sachin Tendulkar was approached in 2011 for a Census awareness advertisement and shot for nearly nine hours straight to get the piece correct. He also refused to accept any cash for the endeavor, as if that wasn’t enough. Tendulkar had also free-of-charge-backed social marketing and several other awareness initiatives, such as those against Polio.
