On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, popular television actor Romiit Raaj is using his platform to speak out against the dangers of smoking and the influence of pop culture on youth behaviour. Known for his versatile roles in Indian television, including his recent appearance in the hit show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Romiit is making it clear—smoking is not just harmful, it’s life-threatening.

“I am against smoking,” says Romiit with conviction. “My father was a chain smoker, and I know firsthand how harmful smoking is. It is not at all cool to smoke.”

In an industry where the on-screen glamorization of smoking persists, Romiit challenges the misconception that smoking is a symbol of masculinity or rebellion. “Just because characters in films played by our favourite actors smoke does not mean it is super macho to smoke in public. We need to filter what we take from watching films.”

Having worked in television for years, with acclaimed shows like Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Maayka, Kundali Bhagya, and his recent role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Romiit understands the deep impact entertainment has on society. “It is very important to have good, healthy habits in life. Smoking causes cancer, and we can’t ignore that anymore.”

Expressing concern over the rising number of young smokers, he adds, “It is very sad to see young kids smoking outside colleges and schools. They have no idea how terrible it is.”

Romiit also called for stronger action, saying, “I wish the government could ban cigarettes in India. It’s shocking to know how easily drugs are available to students and adults who are caught in this addiction. The government is doing its best to warn people through campaigns—I hope people understand and stay away.”

As an actor and a father, Romiit Raaj is clear about the message he wants to send on World No Tobacco Day: Smoking doesn’t make you cool—it steals your health, your future, and often, your life.
